Lyon Shipyard Unveils $24 Million Expansion

news-details

Lyon Shipyard is proud to unveil a $24 million expansion that includes adding an 820-ton mobile boat hoist and will create over 100 new jobs. The expansion will allow us to continue our success as one of the smaller, family-owned shipyards in the region. But this size difference does not slow us down, as our President George Lyon Jr. states: “we use that to our advantage by being nimble and evolving along with our customers.” They prioritize efficiency and working smarter, which has contributed to our longevity in this competitive industry. Project Manager Joshua Gerloff says it best, “Mr. Lyon is always on the lookout for ways to improve our productivity…he is constantly asking, ‘Can we apply this technology at the yard?’ it is really interesting to be with him.”

Lyon Shipyard prides itself in adapting to the needs of our customers. As a result, the z-drive shop was created to better support our harbor tug fleet customers. This dedicated shop works on azimuth drive units instead of all unit repairs going to the machine shop. With ample space and spare parts, we can get the job done sooner. As the US east coast begins to ramp up offshore wind projects, we are uniquely positioned to support their vessels that deliver wind turbines. These vessels rely on azimuth drive units and are mission-critical to the projects.

The mobile boat lift addition has been in the works for over a year. This time was spent designing and planning a solution that would most greatly benefit core Lyon customers: harbor tugs and barges, as well as military craft. The mobile boat lift will allow for emergency repairs in the slings, pierside at the new facility or “on the hill.” They are working in collaboration with the U.S. Hoist of Center Moriches, NY and Boat Lift SRL in Italy to manufacture this mobile boat lift. It is expected to arrive in early 2022.
